Did you know that blood clots are often misdiagnos $Did you know that blood clots are often misdiagnosed in athletes who exhibit classic symptoms? In recognition of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, we’re shining a light on athletes’ risks for blood clots. All of the athletes shown here diagnosed with blood clots at the height of their athletic careers. Blood clots are often missed in athletes because they’re not usually suspected in people who are young and otherwise healthy, as most athletes tend to be. Symptoms of deep vein thrombosis may be misinterpreted as a muscle tear, charley horse, or shin splints. Symptoms of a pulmonary embolism are often attributed to a pulled muscle, inflammation, bronchitis, asthma, or pneumonia. However, athletes have certain risk factors that make them susceptible to blood clots. Athletes, coaches, and trainers should be aware of these risk factors: - Traveling long distances - Dehydration - Significant trauma - Immobilization (brace or cast) - Bone fracture or major surgery - Birth control pills, pregnancy, and hormone replacement therapy - Family history - Extreme height causing the blood to have to travel a longer distance with more opportunity for abnormal clotting - An inherited or acquired clotting disorder - A congenital abnormality of the anatomy of the veins, including May-Thurner syndrome Additionally, athletes are often conditioned to push through the pain, delaying medical attention and diagnosis. It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of blood clots and seek medical attention immediately if a DVT or PE is suspected.
