Athletes may face an increased risk for blood clots, including DVT and PE—especially with factors like injury, travel, dehydration, and intense training. We have many athletes that come to us who have had blood clots and are often misdiagnosed because they are in good shape. Clinicians can miss it because they often don’t think that people in such good shape can get blood clots.
That’s why the National Blood Clot Alliance is bringing this critical conversation to sports medicine professionals at the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Annual Meeting 2026 in Seattle, WA (April 23–29).

The Blake Burgess Blood Clot Prevention Act just passed the Oklahoma Senate! 🎉💙

Blake was 21 years old when a blood clot took his life. Today his name becomes law.

HB 3644 will require Oklahoma hospitals to screen for VTE, train staff, and build a statewide registry — so fewer families have to face what the Burgess family endured.

The old blanket approach to HRT in VTE patients is being challenged — and clinicians need to be part of this conversation.

For years, a history of DVT or PE was often treated as a reason to avoid menopausal hormone replacement therapy altogether. Now, it is no longer simply “yes or no.” It is which patient, which formulation, and at what level of recurrence risk.

What the current evidence supports:
🔬 Route matters — transdermal estrogen appears to carry lower thrombotic risk than oral estrogen
🔬 Thrombophilia status, prior VTE provocation, and recurrence risk are critical variables in individualized decision-making
🔬 Progestogen choice matters— micronized progesterone appears safer than synthetic progestogens
🔬 A collaborative hematology/gynecology approach is essential — these patients shouldn’t be managed in silos

The conversation has moved from “never” to “individualized risk-benefit assessment” — and our patients deserve clinicians who are up to date.

Today is World Day for Safety and Health at Work, and we want to shine a light on an often-overlooked risk across many professions: blood clots.

Jobs that require long periods of sitting—like truck driving—can increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot that often forms in the leg.

Truck drivers are one of the most visible examples. With millions of drivers on the road, many spend long hours sitting with limited movement—creating the perfect conditions for a clot to form.

But they’re not alone.

Anyone who sits for extended periods—whether at a desk, behind the wheel, or in transit—may be at increased risk, especially when combined with factors like dehydration, limited mobility, or underlying health conditions.

When the body stays still for too long, blood can pool in the legs. If a clot forms and travels to the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism (PE)—a life-threatening emergency.

⚠️ Know the signs of a blood clot in the leg:
- Swelling in one leg
- Pain or cramping in the calf
- Warmth or redness
- Tenderness that feels different from a pulled muscle

⚠️ Signs a clot may have traveled to the lungs:
- Sudden shortness of breath
- Chest pain, especially when breathing deeply
- A fast heartbeat
- Coughing up blood
- Feeling faint or lightheaded

🛑 Simple steps to reduce risk—no matter your job:
- Stop every 1–2 hours to walk and stretch
- Flex and point your ankles and calves while driving
- Stay hydrated
- Avoid sitting completely still for long periods
- Consider compression socks, especially for long trips
- Talk to your doctor if you have a history of blood clots or other risk factors

Knowing the signs and taking small steps to stay active could save a life.

Matthew never expected to be diagnosed with DVT and PE after a rugby game.

At first, he thought the cramping in his calf was just soreness from the game or dehydration. Even when he started having shortness of breath, doctors told him it was only asthma.

His story is a reminder that blood clots can happen to anyone, even young, healthy athletes.

This Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’re honored to recognize Joe Cedrone.

Joe and his wife Diane suffered the unimaginable loss of their 36-year-old son Keith, to pulmonary emboli—multiple clots in his lungs.

In the face of this tragedy, Joe has turned his grief into purpose. He is riding his bike across the country—from California to Florida—to honor Keith’s memory and raise awareness and funds to help prevent others from experiencing this kind of loss.

As part of his journey, Joe is asking those who are able to consider donating just one penny per mile—$30—to support blood clot awareness and education.

“Keith was the kindest person you would ever want to meet. Not that he wasn’t tough (he was a black belt in karate), but he was soft spoken and always kind. He loved being with his family (his wife Kelly and 3 daughters Harper (now ten), Fiona (now 8), and Lorelai (now 7). He loved fishing, time at the beach, and following Boston sports teams.

It’s devastating to lose a child, even if that child is forever 36. The work done by the NBCA might save some other parents, wife, sister, or children from losing a loved one. Anything that brings the issue of research and care for the PE and thrombosis conditions to the forefront is time well spent.”
