I Beat Astronomical Odds: Anita’s Story

I Beat Astronomical Odds: Anita’s Story

I’ve had two unprovoked DVTs, one in 2006 and one and 2022. Both times I somehow avoided getting a pulmonary embolism (PE).

In the first incident, I had cramps in my calves and edema/swelling in my legs for days. I decided to go to the doctor, and he pressed hard on my leg, which left a dent, which indicates swelling. He immediately sent me for an ultrasound and took bloodwork, worried that I may have a DVT.

Testing for the presence of a protein fragment called D-dimer in the blood suggests that the body has recently formed and dissolved a blood clot. So, besides an ultrasound, this test was a life-saver!

After the second DVT, I went to a hematologist and had additional testing done, but he was unable to find a cause. He put me on blood thinners for the rest of my life, to protect me. He said I was extremely lucky not to have had a PE either time, and that I beat astronomical odds.

I am so thankful for the providers acting quickly on my symptoms (swelling and calf cramps) and for the D-dimer test! I hope my story helps others and promotes blood clot awareness!
