The National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) is thrilled to welcome professional runner and pulmonary embolism survivor Sage Canaday as Coach of Team Stop the Clot for the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon in November.
With a decade-long career marked by top finishes in some of the world’s most competitive marathons and ultra-marathons — including Boston and NYC — Sage brings unmatched experience and passion to the team. He’s also a seasoned coach, having co-founded Higher Running, a training resource and coaching brand.
Over the next four months, Sage will meet virtually with the 18 runners who are representing NBCA in the marathon — many of whom are blood clot survivors — and provide guidance on training as well as encouragement.
In 2021, Sage faced a bilateral pulmonary embolism that sidelined him and threatened his future in the sport. His recovery was tough, and now he’s using his experience to uplift others.
“I run not only for personal achievement but for those who can’t, for those in recovery, and for the memory of those we’ve lost,” Sage says. “It’s an honor to coach Team Stop the Clot and give back in a way that could save lives.”
Blood clots can affect anyone — including athletes — but resources for returning to training post-diagnosis are limited. NBCA is working to change that.
“Sage brings authenticity and heart to our efforts,” says Dr. Julie Partridge, sport psychology expert and NBCA Vice Chair. “He understands the fear, the recovery, and the fight — and that’s powerful for the community we serve.”
Team Stop the Clot is more than a marathon team — it’s a movement of survivors, supporters, and athletes dedicated to raising awareness and funding to stop blood clots in their tracks. Together, we’re honoring stories, saving lives, and crossing the finish line with purpose.
