World Thrombosis Day (October 13)
World Thrombosis Day shines a spotlight on blood clots—deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST)—and how to prevent them. Join NBCA to raise awareness, learn the signs, and take action through our 6th Annual Fun Run for World Thrombosis Day.
What is World Thrombosis Day?
World Thrombosis Day is observed every year on October 13 to increase global awareness of thrombosis, or blood clots that can form in the veins (DVT) and travel to the lungs (PE) as well as the brain (CVST). The day encourages prevention, early recognition, and timely treatment. The date—October 13—was chosen to honor the birthday of Rudolf Virchow, the 19th century German physician who pioneered the modern understanding of thrombosis.
Why it Matters
Blood clots are common, preventable, and can be fatal, but recognition of signs and symptoms among the American public is low. Awareness efforts like World Thrombosis Day can save lives by helping people recognize signs and symptoms sooner and take steps for prevention.
NBCA’s Fun Run for World Thrombosis Day
Our World Thrombosis Day celebration centers around physical movement because of the importance of exercise in the prevention of and recovery from blood clots. The first virtual Fun Run for World Thrombosis Day was in 2020. Every year since then, blood clot survivors, advocates, and supporters have taken part in the event.
This year’s Fun Run takes place October 10 – 13. Learn more and register here.
