A routine visit turned life-saving thanks to one physical therapist’s instincts.

When 16-year-old athlete Carlie James felt unusually tired and had a racing heart, her physical therapy mentor, Drew Moore, urged her to seek medical care. Doctors found a pulmonary embolism that could have been deadly.

Physical therapists work closely with patients, often for extended periods each week, allowing them to notice subtle health changes. This familiarity helps them spot early warning signs of serious conditions like blood clots and take timely action.

Carlie’s story highlights the important role of physical therapists and the gravity of recognizing symptoms, speaking up, and acting quickly.

“After being hospitalized for over a week due to multiple PEs, I spent three months on blood thinners and went through the physical and mental challenges of recovery. This experience forced me to confront both the immediate physical impacts and the long-term implications of living with clotting issues, something that I still face today. Seven years ago, NBCA President Leslie Lake’s life changed in an instant when a blood clot in her lungs nearly took it. She was simply walking home from the dry cleaner when she suddenly couldn’t breathe.

Today marks Leslie’s 7th clotiversary, and we’re honoring her journey from survivor to fierce advocate.

In a recent interview with AARP, Leslie opened up about her frightening experience and the lack of support she faced after diagnosis, which ultimately led her to NBCA.

“I was given a second chance,” Leslie said. “Now I want to pay that forward. If sharing my story helps save even one life, it’s worth it.”

We’re grateful to AARP for helping spread awareness about blood clots, especially in people over 50, who face higher risk.

Tilly struggled mentally and physically after bein

Tilly struggled mentally and physically after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and May-Thurner syndrome at 19.

To process her experience and spread much-needed awareness, Tilly created a short documentary that tells the story of Kari, another DVT survivor, and we are thrilled to share it.

“This is a story about being believed and about being seen and about finding the people who will hold you up, no matter what is running through your veins,” Tilly says in the video.

🏳️‍🌈 This Pride Month, we're spotlighting Katherine’s story, a powerful reminder of the importance of knowing and managing blood clot risks for transgender women.

When calf pain turned out to be a sign of a life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE), Katherine was forced to pause her hormone therapy journey for seven painful months. But with the support of her care team, she eventually found a way to safely resume HRT while continuing anticoagulation treatment.

Her message: Don’t ignore the signs of a blood clot. Pain, swelling, and shortness of breath are symptoms you should never brush off—no matter where you are in your journey.

He was passionate about so many things — cooking, baking, woodworking, gardening, amateur radio, stamp collecting, coin collecting, music, travel, the list goes on! My mom, sister, and I miss him dearly every day. I couldn't be more excited to run 26.2 miles in his honor and help fundraise for such an amazing cause.”

Did you know that antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disorder that significantly increases the risk of blood clots?

June is APS Awareness Month, and NBCA stands in solidarity with the 1 in 2,000 individuals living with this condition.

APS happens when the immune system mistakenly produces antibodies that attack normal proteins in the blood. This can trigger serious complications like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), stroke, heart attack, and pregnancy loss.

Today is National Cancer Survivors Day, a moment to honor the strength of survivors and raise awareness about the complications they continue to face, including blood clots.

People with cancer are up to 7 times more likely to develop a blood clot, and for many, the risk doesn’t end when treatment does. Blood clots remain one of the leading causes of death in cancer patients—even among survivors.

In two episodes of our Taking a Breath podcast, survivors Mark Lewis (Episode 10, Season 1,**)** and Michael Philbin (Episode 3, Season 2) share their personal experiences with cancer and life-threatening blood clots. Their stories are a powerful reminder of why awareness matters.
