🎉 Exciting new research offers hope for safer b

🎉 Exciting new research offers hope for safer blood clot prevention after knee replacement surgery.

A team of researchers led by NBCA Medical and Scientific Advisory Board member Dr. Jeffrey Weitz of @McMasterU tested two new medicines that block a clotting protein called factor XI. They found that one of them prevented blood clots better than today’s standard treatments after knee surgery, without increasing bleeding complications.

Dr. Weitz presented these findings last week at the @american_heart's Scientific Sessions 2025 in New Orleans.

This research could pave the way for a new type of blood thinner that prevents dangerous clots while reducing bleeding risks for patients after surgery.

“It was a couple of days after traveling when I

“It was a couple of days after traveling when I first noticed something wasn’t right. I had switched birth control pills within the last several months. I was at a conference, mid-presentation, when I realized that I couldn’t quite get through full sentences without pausing for breath. I told myself it was just nerves. Even at the gym that week, I felt more fatigued than usual — nothing alarming, just off.

When I got home, I noticed it again walking up stairs, and then during a mountain-bike ride, it became undeniable. I was short of breath riding from the parking lot to the trailhead, and my heart rate had jumped to 130 — much higher than normal for that effort. I sat down, felt a dull ache in my calf that I’d ignored earlier in the week, and suddenly it all clicked. I likely had a DVT and pulmonary embolism.

Even then, I hesitated to go to the hospital — it didn’t feel that bad, and I worried I’d be embarrassed if it was nothing. It wasn’t nothing. I was admitted and underwent a thrombectomy for a significant pulmonary embolism.

Looking back, I realize how easily this could have been missed — especially in athletes. My resting heart rate was only in the 90s, higher than normal for me but not technically tachycardic, and I never had chest pain. That’s what makes it so unsettling: the symptoms can be incredibly mild.

In a recent Stop the Clot video, @TatyanaMcFaddenUSA talked about how hard it was to return to activity — and I really relate to that. I underestimated how difficult it would be to get back to endurance exercise. I’m used to being in shape, and even though I didn’t take much time off, it took me nearly a year to get back to where I was before it happened. Even now, I still have to fight the panic that comes with shortness of breath — especially during mountain-bike races. I know it’s probably not another PE, but that fear still lives in my body.

It’s normal to feel anxious and uncertain after a clot. I got better with time—and therapy helped most.”

New research shows how quickly blood clot treatmen

New research shows how quickly blood clot treatment is evolving.

A national study found that thrombectomies, or procedures to remove pulmonary emboli from the lungs, have increased more than 700% since 2017.

Experts say this sharp rise reflects major improvements in technology that now make these minimally invasive treatments safer and more effective than they were a decade ago.

Most of these procedures are now done in outpatient hospital settings, reflecting how treatment for blood clots is becoming less invasive and more accessible.

🌟 November 12 is CTEPH Awareness Day. Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare but serious complication that can occur after a pulmonary embolism (PE).

It happens when blood clots don’t fully dissolve, leaving behind scar-like tissue that blocks or narrows the arteries in the lungs. Over time, this can cause high blood pressure in the lungs and strain on the heart.

Common symptoms include fatigue and unexplained shortness of breath. Some people may also experience a dry cough, chest pain, or rapid heartbeat. About 1 in 25 people who have a PE could develop CTEPH.

👉 Last year, the National Blood Clot Alliance hosted a PEP Talk with Dr. Timothy Fernandes, pulmonologist at UC San Diego Health, to discuss CTEPH and other post-clot complications.

Dr. Fernandes emphasized that CTEPH is often underdiagnosed and that listening to patients’ symptoms is key to early detection. He also urges patients to push for answers.

2️⃣ Prolonged immobility and travel: Extended flights, deployments, or recovery periods with limited movement can all contribute to clot formation.

3️⃣ High stress levels: Physical strain and emotional stress, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), may cause inflammation that elevates clotting risk.

4️⃣ Underlying health conditions: Veterans have higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, or other cardiovascular conditions that can further increase risk.

👉 “In February 2025, while at work, I started

👉 “In February 2025, while at work, I started developing a terrible headache, fever, chills, and body aches. I assumed I was coming down with the flu. I spent a day in bed watching TV and resting. Two days later, the flu-like symptoms subsided, but I developed stiffness and pain in my neck. Within 24 hours, that pain moved from my neck to my arms, and then to my legs. Something felt off, so I went to the ER.

My platelets were high, but the doctors sent me home with a diagnosis of “post-viral inflammation.” I left feeling anxious and uneasy, with a strong sense that something was seriously wrong. The next morning, I went back to the ER—again, I was sent home, and my platelets were even higher. On day three, I returned. Sent home. Day four, the same thing. Each time, my anxiety grew stronger. I just couldn’t shake the feeling that something was being missed.

While waiting hours in the ER (15 to 18 hours each visit), I started researching my symptoms and examining my lab results—I have a small medical background—and kept asking if they were checking for blood clots. I was told I wasn’t at risk and to stop Googling. No one, not even my parents or my husband, took me seriously.

On day five, I went back to the ER again. After waiting 18 hours, a doctor came in, and I told him I wasn’t leaving until they ran a D-dimer test. He finally agreed. Within an hour, he returned and told me it was positive. I was immediately taken for a CT scan, which revealed a bilateral pulmonary embolism (PE).

That week, I saved my own life.

I still don’t have answers. I’m on blood thinners and following up with a hematologist, but no one can tell me why it happened. I continue to advocate for myself and keep searching for answers.

I struggle with health trauma and daily anxiety. Every ache and pain sends me into a spiral of fear. I’m terrified to stop blood thinners or even catch a cold, because I don’t know what caused this to happen.

Listen to your gut no matter what friends, family or professionals say. If you don’t feel right in your body, advocate for yourself!”

❤️🩸 “I’m 30 years old and have a complicated medical history. As a teenager, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and today I manage more than 20 different health conditions.

On April 20, 2021, I felt severe pain in my left leg. It was swollen, purple, and hot to the touch. I called my doctor, who told me to go to the ER right away because it could be a blood clot.

I remember thinking, ‘I’m only 25 — how could I have a blood clot?’ But tests confirmed it: I had a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in my left leg, and scans showed blood clots in both lungs (pulmonary embolisms). I was shocked and scared.

Because the ER wasn’t connected to a hospital, I was transferred by ambulance and started on a blood thinner through an IV. I spent a day there and was sent home on medication called rivaroxaban. Later testing showed I have a genetic condition called factor V Leiden, which makes blood clots more likely. Some of my relatives had it too and sadly died from clots.

Six months later, I developed more clots in both legs. I spent six days in the hospital and learned that the first medication hadn’t worked for me. My doctors switched me to warfarin, another blood thinner that requires regular testing to make sure it’s working safely.

Because I couldn’t easily leave home, my mom helped me advocate to get blood tests done at home. Insurance approved it, and now I use a small device to test my blood by pricking my finger—just like someone checking their blood sugar.

No matter how young or healthy you think you are, blood clots can happen to anyone—especially if you have a condition like factor V Leiden. I never thought it could happen to me, but it did. And I hope my story reminds others to listen to their bodies and speak up if something doesn’t feel right.”

In response to our recent post, so many of you shared your experiences with blood clotting disorder testing — also called thrombophilia testing — and no two stories were the same.

➡️ One person learned she had a prothrombin gene mutation after five miscarriages and was later diagnosed with antiphospholipid syndrome.

➡️ Another experienced a clot during military training that was initially dismissed as a muscle strain. Testing later showed she is positive for factor V Leiden.

➡️ Some learned about their inherited risk after multiple pulmonary emboli and now worry about whether their children could have inherited the same condition.

➡️ Others have faced repeated clots without a clear answer despite extensive testing.

These stories show just how complex thrombophilia testing can be and why communication, timing, and access to care are so important.
