In 2022, I had an emergency C-section due to a complete placental abruption. I lost a significant amount of blood, and my son was born weighing just 3 pounds and taken to the NICU.
After my C-section, I developed a severe spinal headache that was intense when sitting or standing and relieved when lying flat. I received a spinal blood patch, but my symptoms did not fully resolve. Despite continuing to experience severe headaches, I was discharged.
About one week later, while visiting my son in the NICU, I stood up to leave and suddenly became extremely dizzy, collapsed, and suffered a seizure and a stroke. A code blue was called immediately. I was later diagnosed with CVST (Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis) — a blood clot in my brain.
Looking back, I believe my severe headache was a warning sign. I am incredibly grateful this happened inside the hospital where help was immediate, rather than while driving home. My experience taught me how critical it is to listen to your body and advocate for yourself, especially in the postpartum period.
My experience made me more aware of postpartum risks and the importance of listening to my body. I take my health more seriously, advocate for myself, and prioritize hydration, rest, and follow-up care. It also gave me a deep sense of gratitude and purpose in raising awareness.
I’ve learned that postpartum women are at higher risk for blood clots and that severe headaches should never be ignored. Listening to your body can save your life. NBCA resources and community stories have helped me feel less alone and more empowered to share my story.
Listen to your body and advocate for yourself. Don’t ignore severe headaches or unusual symptoms, especially postpartum. God gave you instincts for a reason. Speak up, push for answers, and trust that your voice matters.
