We are pleased to share that House Bill 3644 (HB 3644), the “Blake Burgess Act,” passed through the House yesterday. This is a significant milestone in the legislative process. The bill now heads to the Senate for further consideration, with the goal of reaching Governor Stitt’s desk to be signed into law.
About Blake Burgess
This legislation is named in memory of Blake Burgess, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 21 due to a pulmonary embolism. His death underscores the necessity of this bill; with increased awareness and standardized screening protocols, many of these cases are preventable. We honor the efforts of the Burgess family in bringing attention to this issue and their work in advocating for these necessary reforms.
Building a Legacy of Protection
The Blake Burgess Act represents the next step in a growing national movement. Following the 2025 passage of the landmark Emily Adkins Family Prevention Act—which pioneered state-level legislative efforts to address blood clot prevention—Oklahoma is now stepping forward to prioritize this issue, aiming to ensure better outcomes for patients across the state.
With Gratitude to the Bill’s Champions
We appreciate the commitment of the bill’s sponsors, whose work has been instrumental in this progress:
- Author: Rep. Preston Stinson
- Principal Senate Author: Sen. Kelly Hines
- Coauthor: Rep. Nick Archer
We remain hopeful that this momentum will carry through the Senate and that this legislation will soon become law, helping to save lives through better awareness and standardized care in Oklahoma.
