ORGANIZATION AND MISSION

The National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) is the leading nonprofit voluntary health organization in the United States focused on building awareness and community among people who are affected by blood clots or at increased risk for blood clots, including, but not limited to, people with clotting disorders, atrial fibrillation, cancer, traumatic injury, and risks related to surgery, lengthy immobility, child birth and birth control.

NBCA’s mission is dedicated to advancing the prevention, early diagnosis and successful treatment of life-threatening blood clots such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism; and accomplishes this through programs that build public awareness, educate patients and healthcare professionals, and promote supportive public and private sector policy.

Blake Burgess was just 21 — strong, athletic, kind, and deeply loved. After contracting COVID, he continued to experience symptoms that were repeatedly dismissed as lingering effects of the virus. In reality, he was suffering from a pulmonary embolism.

In the latest episode of Taking a Breath [Season 3, Episode 7], Blake’s parents share his story, the grief of losing him, and why knowing the signs, symptoms, and family history of blood clots can save lives.

Through their grief, they have become passionate advocates for blood clot awareness, helping to advance the Blake Burgess Act to improve blood clot awareness and treatment in the state of Oklahoma.

Bryce Stanfield was just 21 — a student athlete

Bryce Stanfield was just 21 — a student athlete with a bright future — when his life was cut short by a pulmonary embolism.

His story is a powerful reminder that blood clots don’t always look the way we expect. Even young, strong, highly active people can be at risk — and symptoms can be easy to overlook or explain away.

In the years since Bryce’s passing, his mother has become a passionate advocate, working with the National Blood Clot Alliance to help prevent other families from experiencing this kind of loss.

His teammates and the Furman community continue to honor his legacy — including former @FurmanUniversity teammates Julian Ashby of the @Patriots and Ryan Miller of the @NYGiants, who selected the National Blood Clot Alliance as their @NFL My Cause, My Cleats charity in honor of Bryce.

Today, the National Blood Clot Alliance is on Capitol Hill alongside clinicians, meeting with Members of Congress and their staff to elevate a critical, often overlooked public health issue: blood clots.

Each year, up to 900,000 Americans are affected — and as many as 100,000 lives are lost. Yet too many cases are preventable, and too many diagnoses are delayed.

Together — patients, advocates, and healthcare professionals — we’re bringing both the human impact and clinical reality to these conversations.

We’re here to advocate for federal support to:
🔹 Develop a comprehensive, nationwide blood clot education and awareness campaign focused on prevention and treatment
🔹 Expand education and training for healthcare professionals to improve recognition of the signs and symptoms

But awareness is only part of the solution. Patients also need access to high-quality, evidence-based care.

That’s why NBCA’s VTE Centers of Excellence program exists — to recognize and support institutions committed to delivering the highest standard of care across prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.

And we’re not stopping there…

We’re excited to share that this work is expanding — with more to come soon.

Because of this incredible community, more than 1,300 letters were sent to Congress urging support for federal blood clot awareness and education funding.

On an ordinary Wednesday, Chelsey’s life changed

On an ordinary Wednesday, Chelsey’s life changed forever.

At 31, with no prior health issues, she suddenly collapsed. In the hospital, doctors discovered she had suffered a massive bilateral pulmonary embolism, leading to heart and respiratory failure. Her family was told she might not survive.

She did.

Today, Chelsey is using her second chance to give back.

During Blood Clot Awareness Month, she’s hosting an online fundraiser featuring handmade resin lung keychains — with proceeds supporting NBCA’s mission to advance the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of blood clots through education, advocacy, and patient support.

“It is my pleasure to be able to give back to this community and support it in any way I can. When I had my massive pulmonary embolism in 2022, Stop the Clot was the first blood clot support group I came across and they gave me so many answers and confidence to feel safer navigating my life. That was instrumental in helping me through that trauma.”

Let’s face it, after a blood clot many of us are anxious and worried about our bodies and what we can and cannot do. But this March (during Blood Clot Awareness Month, no less), the USA Track & Field Masters Indoor Nationals in Albuquerque, NM saw blood clot survivor Roxanne Brockner take the win! She won the Women’s 60-64 age group in the 60 meter dash and placed second in the 200 meter.

Roxanne is a two-time blood clot survivor and sends a message of hope and inspiration, proving that we can learn to trust our bodies, return to the activities we love, AND reach new personal bests.

Michael Matthews is one of the world’s top profe

Michael Matthews is one of the world’s top professional cyclists, known for his success on some of the biggest stages in the sport. But despite being incredibly fit and training for the Tour de France, he developed multiple blood clots in his lungs, known as pulmonary embolisms, or PEs.

At first, Michael struggled to make sense of what was happening. He was doing the same training he had always done, yet suddenly felt like he couldn’t breathe and described it as feeling “underwater,” with no oxygen in his lungs. Because he is such a highly trained athlete, the warning signs were not immediately obvious. Thankfully, his wife recognized that something was seriously wrong and urged him to go to the hospital, where scans revealed multiple clots in his lungs.

Now Michael is using his voice to remind others that blood clots can happen to anyone. This March, his story is a powerful reminder that no one is invincible, and that being “Strong Enough to Ask” and getting checked when something feels off can save your life.
