Dr. Charles Richard Drew was a pioneering physician and scientist whose groundbreaking research laid the foundation for modern blood banking.

His innovations in blood plasma storage and preservation made large-scale blood transfusions possible, saving countless lives during World War II and shaping emergency medicine for generations to come.

As the first director of the American Red Cross Blood Bank, he helped build systems still used today. He also courageously challenged the racist practice of segregating blood by race, using science to confront injustice.

Dr. Drew’s legacy lives on in transfusion medicine, emergency care, and the ongoing fight for equity in healthcare.

The world feels a little less bright without the w

The world feels a little less bright without the wit and warmth of Catherine O’Hara. 🕊️ From SCTV to the iconic Moira Rose, she taught us how to find joy in the absurd.

But her passing on January 30 has brought a hidden danger to light. While we remember her laughter, we must also heed the lesson of her loss: Catherine died of a pulmonary embolism (blood clot) linked to her private battle with rectal cancer.

The reality is sobering:

Blood clots are the 2nd leading cause of death for cancer patients.
1 in 5 people with cancer will develop a clot.
100,000 people die from pulmonary embolisms every year.
Cancer can make the blood “sticky,” and treatments like chemo increase the risk. But these tragedies are often preventable if we know what to look for.

Know the Signs: ⚠️ Swelling, pain, or redness in one limb (DVT) ⚠️ Sudden shortness of breath or sharp chest pain (PE)

A spontaneous decision to jump into a bouncy castl

A spontaneous decision to jump into a bouncy castle changed my life.

What started as harmless fun ended with three broken bones in my foot. As my body worked to heal from the injury, blood clots quietly formed in my leg—deep vein thrombosis (DVT). I had no warning signs. No pain. No swelling.

Then I began having difficulty breathing. At first, I brushed it off as stress—but over time it worsened, until one day I could barely breathe at all.

That’s when I learned the truth: I had extensive pulmonary emboli throughout my lungs.

The clots didn’t resolve quickly. They took nearly nine months to break down—far longer than expected—and during that time, they took so much from me. A job I loved. Plans I had been looking forward to (goodbye, Eras Tour).

The mental health impact of surviving pulmonary embolisms was the hardest thing I have ever faced. When I tried to return to work, I quickly realized I wasn’t physically or mentally ready.

I immediately felt like I had failed. I pushed myself with unrealistic expectations, and that pressure only made healing harder.

Blood clots are serious and life-threatening—and recovery is not just physical. Your body and your mind both need time to heal, and neither can be rushed without negative consequences.

With the help of supportive therapists, I came to understand what I was experiencing as a post-PE adjustment disorder. I’m now working closely with professionals on a recovery plan, and while progress can feel slow, I see it every day.

A health crisis has a way of amplifying existing vulnerabilities in our lives. As a chronically anxious person, my PEs magnified this condition tenfold. I have a long way to go—but I’m making progress in my healing journey by being kinder to myself and being proud of my body for surviving.

Very few people know about how dangerous DVT and PEs are. Hearing about other people’s stories through the National Blood Clot Alliance has been incredibly helpful in making me feel less alone.

Now he’s speaking directly to our community.

When an astronaut developed a dangerous blood clot while aboard the International Space Station, there was no existing playbook for what to do next. NASA turned to Dr. Stephan Moll.

Working alongside NASA physicians, Dr. Moll helped assess risk and adapt treatment strategies to guide care for a patient 250 miles above Earth—playing a key role in the astronaut’s safe return and recovery.

Now, that same expert is joining us for our February PEP Talk.

"I’m a healthy, active 45-year-old who lives a busy, active life. In December 2025, everything changed when I was suddenly taken down by a massive blood clot in my leg (deep vein thrombosis or DVT).

It started about a month earlier with what I thought were calf cramps. They never went away and slowly crept all the way up the back of my left leg. I assumed it was a muscle strain, even though I hadn’t injured myself.

When weeks passed with no improvement, I finally called my doctor. After explaining my symptoms, the nurse immediately told me to go to the ER, as she was concerned it could be a life threatening blood clot. An ultrasound confirmed it. My risk factors included estrogen-based contraception and frequent air travel.

By that point, the pain was so intense I could barely walk. I was sent home on blood thinners and warned that the clot could travel to my lungs. I was told to watch closely for chest pain.

Thankfully, that never happened but for two weeks, walking was extremely difficult. Then things slowly started to improve, and I was able to return to work. My doctor cleared me to travel and attempt the 10K I had signed up for, with very clear instructions not to push myself.

So I went to run with one goal: start the race, knowing I might not finish. I told my sisters (who are much faster runners than I am) that I would only be walking and would go as far as my body allowed.

To my absolute amazement, I finished the 10K. It was slow. My leg swelled some. I never had calf pain, so I just kept moving forward. I was firmly in the back of the pack and this was my slowest 10K, but without a doubt, my most earned. It’s a reminder that sometimes the biggest victories aren’t about speed, but simply about showing up.

What made it even more meaningful was my sisters. They stayed with me the entire time, never worrying about their own pace or finish times, just making sure I was okay. My leg actually felt better after the race. All that walking seemed to help my circulation.

I’ve learned that blood clots can happen to anyone, and I’m lucky it wasn’t worse."

🎙️ New Episode Alert! 🎙️Season 3, Episode 5 of Taking a Breath: A Stop the Clot podcast is now available on all major podcast platforms.

In this episode, listeners hear from Florida Senator @shevrinjones, a blood clot survivor who also lost a brother to a pulmonary embolism.

Like many survivors, Jones has lived with the ongoing anxiety and fear of recurrence. This personal experience drove him to become a key proponent of the Emily Adkins Family Prevention Act, which was signed into law in 2025.

It established the Blood Clot and Pulmonary Embolism Policy Workgroup, aimed at reducing preventable deaths from blood clots in Florida through improved screening, awareness, and data collection.

This is a step in the right direction, although much work needs to be done in terms of awareness, he said.

“People are not educated on it,” Jones said.

Calling early-career VTE researchers 📣 The National Blood Clot Alliance is now accepting applications for the 2026 Jennifer Luft Emerging VTE Clinician Research Award.

This $20,000 award supports early-career scientists and clinicians working to advance patient-centered research in venous thromboembolism (VTE). Eligible projects may span basic, translational, clinical, epidemiologic, bioengineering, or related fields, with a focus on improving care, access, quality of life, shared decision-making, or health equity for people affected by blood clots.

This award honors the life of Jennifer Luft, who suffered pulmonary emboli at age 23, resulting in a severe anoxic brain injury. Inspired by Jennifer’s strength and the devotion of her family, NBCA established this award to support the next generation of researchers committed to advancing the understanding and treatment of VTE through patient-oriented research.
