Blood clots are a serious public health crisis, especially in the Black community, where risks and outcomes are disproportionately more severe. The tour aims to address these critical health disparities by partnering with trusted local churches to deliver lifesaving blood clot education and awareness.

Attendees will be empowered with life-saving health information!

Learn the signs and symptoms of blood clots.
Understand the risk factors, such as pregnancy, and how to prevent blood clots.
Hear from members of the Black community who experienced blood clots.
Participate in a Q&A session with experts.
Enjoy free health screenings, refreshments, raffle prizes, and more!

During pregnancy, Ebony was told she had pulled a

During pregnancy, Ebony was told she had pulled a muscle in her calf. She was sent home and told to take Tylenol, ice, and elevate her leg.

But the pain kept getting worse.

Eventually, Ebony could barely walk and needed a cane. When she sought another opinion, she was immediately sent to the ER and diagnosed with DVT.

Black Maternal Health Week exists because Black women face significantly higher risks during pregnancy and postpartum, including blood clots, preeclampsia, hemorrhage, and other serious complications. THey are also more likely to have their symptoms dismissed and are more than three times as likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women.

Ebony’s story is a reminder to trust your body, advocate for yourself, and keep pushing for answers when something does not feel right.

During Black Maternal Health Week, we’re resharing a powerful episode of Taking a Breath: A Stop the Clot—because stories like Shamony’s should never be overlooked.

In this episode, Omari Maynard shares the story of his life partner, Shamony Gibson, who tragically passed away just 13 days after giving birth due to a blood clot.

💔 Shamony knew the risks. Her family was informed. They followed medical guidance.

And still—this happened.

📊 The reality: Black women in the U.S. are 3–4x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women—and blood clots are a leading cause of maternal death.

Shamony’s story is a heartbreaking reminder that awareness alone isn’t enough. We need better recognition of symptoms, faster diagnosis, and equitable care.

In the face of unimaginable loss, Omari and Shamony’s mother founded the ARIAH Foundation to advocate for change.

This morning, Suresh Vedantham, M.D. — Principal Investigator of the C-TRACT Trial and a valued member of NBCA’s Medical and Scientific Advisory Board (MASAB) — presented C-TRACT results and announced publication in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The C-TRACT trial brings new insight into the treatment of post-thrombotic syndrome—an area with significant impact on long-term patient outcomes.

NBCA ADVOCACY NEWS: The Blake Burgess Blood Clot Prevention Act (HB 3644) passed the Oklahoma Senate committee 9-0. NINE to ZERO on April 8th.

Blake Burgess was 21 years old when a blood clot took his life. This bill — his legacy — would require Oklahoma hospitals to screen patients for VTE risk and train staff to respond.
