Blood clots are a serious public health crisis, especially in the Black community, where risks and outcomes are disproportionately more severe. The tour aims to address these critical health disparities by partnering with trusted local churches to deliver lifesaving blood clot education and awareness.

Attendees will be empowered with life-saving health information!

Learn the signs and symptoms of blood clots.
Understand the risk factors, such as pregnancy, and how to prevent blood clots.
Hear from members of the Black community who experienced blood clots.
Participate in a Q&A session with experts.

The latest pro athlete to be diagnosed with blood

The latest pro athlete to be diagnosed with blood clots is Zack Wheeler, star pitcher for the @Phillies.

Wheeler underwent a successful thrombolysis procedure to remove a blood clot in his right upper extremity on Monday morning at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Wheeler’s first symptom of deep vein thrombosis was reportedly a feeling of heaviness in his right shoulder on Friday, when he pitched five innings against the Nationals. The blood clot was discovered Saturday, and he was placed on a 15-day injured list.

Even though pro athletes often young and healthy, certain factors in sports can raise clot risk:

⚾ Dehydration from intense training

⚾Injuries or surgeries that limit movement

⚾Long travel to games or events

⚾ Repetitive motions that compress veins (like pitching or cycling)

💊As the fall semester kicks off, make sure you’re choosing birth control with your health in mind. Some options, like the pill, patch, or ring, contain estrogen, which can raise your risk of dangerous blood clots, especially if you:

• Smoke
• Carry extra weight
• Have a family history of clots
• Spend long stretches inactive (travel, recovery after surgery)

Safer alternatives exist, like condoms, the copper IUD, or progestin-only methods such as the over-the-counter Opill, that won’t increase clot risk.

If you or a family member has had blood clots, talk to your healthcare provider about the best options for you.

Thank you to everyone who joined last night’s PEP Talk on aging and blood clots with Dr. Anna Parks, hematologist from the University of Utah.

In this clip, Dr. Parks explains the concept of “inflammaging,” the low-grade, chronic inflammation that tends to develop as we age.

It’s not the same as the intense inflammation that happens when fighting an infection or healing from an injury. Instead, it’s subtle and persistent, often going unnoticed. Over time, this background inflammation is thought to contribute to many health conditions, including blood clots.
