Blood clots are a public health crisis—yet awareness remains dangerously low.

Every year in the U.S.:
🔴 900,000 people are affected by blood clots (DVT/PE).
⚠️ 100,000 lives are lost—more than breast cancer, HIV, and car crashes combined.

Despite these staggering numbers, many people don’t know the signs and symptoms of blood clots until it’s too late.

Advocating for national awareness and federal funding for blood clots is a complex process that requires efforts at the federal, state, and local levels. That’s why we need YOUR help!

Here are two powerful ways you can get involved:
1. Advocate for Federal Funding – Your voice can make a significant impact. Help secure critical funding by reaching out to your local Congressional representatives and pushing for support for blood clot prevention and education funding. What started as a sudden “charley horse” in he

What started as a sudden “charley horse” in her left arm quickly became discoloration, stiffness, and a lump she couldn’t ignore. Trusting her instincts (and having a doctor who listened) led to a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) caused by Factor V Leiden, an inherited blood clotting condition her family didn’t even know they carried.

Today, she’s back to living a full college life and hopes to become a pharmacist — but her story is a powerful reminder: blood clots don’t always look the way we expect, and speaking up about symptoms can save a life.

"Doctors ordered for me to get a chest scan and there it showed I had suffered two blood clots in each lung. I was put on blood thinners and went through surgery to where doctors put a filter inside my chest. I had to learn to be stable and walk normal or else I couldn’t be released. A CT-scan revealed a massive pulmonary embolism—a large blood clot in Jason’s lungs. He was rushed to the cath lab in an attempt to break up the clot, but his condition rapidly declined into respiratory failure, and despite CPR, he could not be revived. His sudden death shocked the family, especially because he had not expressed any warning signs that morning. In the aftermath, questions about underlying causes led to the discovery that all three of his daughters and wife had Factor V Leiden.

His passing highlights how silently and quickly pulmonary embolisms can occur and underscores the importance of awareness, genetic risk factors, and proactive medical care. Talk to your doctor about genetic testing and be aware of the reality of blood clots, sometimes without symptoms! “Don't live in fear, but be observant and take precautions.”

🌟 Honoring Dr. Charles Richard Drew during Black History Month 🌟

Dr. Charles Richard Drew was a pioneering physician and scientist whose groundbreaking research laid the foundation for modern blood banking.

His innovations in blood plasma storage and preservation made large-scale blood transfusions possible, saving countless lives during World War II and shaping emergency medicine for generations to come.

As the first director of the American Red Cross Blood Bank, he helped build systems still used today. He also courageously challenged the racist practice of segregating blood by race, using science to confront injustice.

Dr. Drew’s legacy lives on in transfusion medicine, emergency care, and the ongoing fight for equity in healthcare.

The world feels a little less bright without the wit and warmth of Catherine O’Hara. 🕊️ From SCTV to the iconic Moira Rose, she taught us how to find joy in the absurd.

But her passing on January 30 has brought a hidden danger to light. While we remember her laughter, we must also heed the lesson of her loss: Catherine died of a pulmonary embolism (blood clot) linked to her private battle with rectal cancer.

The reality is sobering:

Blood clots are the 2nd leading cause of death for cancer patients.
1 in 5 people with cancer will develop a clot.
100,000 people die from pulmonary embolisms every year.
Cancer can make the blood “sticky,” and treatments like chemo increase the risk. But these tragedies are often preventable if we know what to look for.
