NBCA Announces Two Events for Blood Clot Awareness Month March 2013

NBCA is grateful to the Lacey Weatherford, Chase Walden and the Association of Black Women Attorneys (ABWA) for their support of NBCA’s mission to Stop The Clot®.

Chasing Nikki Anniversary Event:           March 2                               Mesa, Arizona

Join bestselling author of young adult novels, Lacey Weatherford, and cover model, Chase Walden as they host the Chasing Nikki Anniversary Eventon March 2 at Amazing Jake’s in Mesa Arizona to benefit the National Blood Clot Alliance.

Chasing Nikki was voted one of the Top 100 Best Teen Books on Amazon for 2012, as well as being a multi time #1 bestseller and highest rated book.  The sequel, Finding Chase, has also immediately sped through the rankings to a #1 bestseller as well.  This tragic, yet emotionally beautiful, storyline has touched many hearts. This may be due to the fact that author and Arizona native, Lacey Weatherford, based some of the story on events that happened in her own life, as well as that of her cover model, Chase Walden, who is also the muse for her main character. She has always hoped to use a book to spread awareness about Pulmonary Embolism, which is what caused her mother to pass away suddenly after an accident. Chasing Nikki and Finding Chase are the result of that dream.

Lacey and Chase want to say thank you for all the support given to them by readers. The two will be hosting the Chasing Nikki Anniversary Event on March 2, from 6-10 P.M., at Amazing Jake’s at 1830 E. Baseline Road in Mesa, Arizona. All are welcome; however, the first 200 guests will get in free.  If you are not part of the first 200, the price for dinner and a game card will be $21.00 at the door.

There will be food, games, and fun for all, as well as a book signing, photo opportunities with Lacey and Chase, and other book merchandise such as T-shirts, posters, and specialty swag items for sale. In honor of Lacey’s mother, Peggy Jackson, all proceeds and donations raised will be given to The National Blood Clot Alliance to help raise awareness and prevention of this silent killer. Please come join Lacey and Chase to celebrate books, reading, and help to “Stop the Clot!”

ABWA 4th Annual 5k Walk for Blood Clot Awareness:   March 30            Brooklyn, NY

The National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) is proud to team with the Association of Black Women Attorneys (ABWA) for a 5K walk to raise awareness about blood clots.  The 4th annual walk will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2013.   The walk begins at 11:00 AM, in Prospect Park Brooklyn, with “Check-In” beginning at 10:00 AM at the Bartel Pritchard Square entrance at Prospect Park West and 15th Street in Brooklyn.

Blood clots affect individuals and families more than most people realize.  Approximately 350,000-600,000 Americans have blood clots in the leg (deep vein thrombosis or DVT) or lung (pulmonary embolism or PE) each year.  About 100,000 die, meaning up to 1 out of 3 of those affected.  In the greater New York City area (NYC, NJ, CT), there are 56,250 blood clots and 18,750 deaths each year, and most of these can be prevented.  NBCA wants to make sure that individuals with blood clots, and their families, experience outcomes of early recognition, quality healthcare, and renewed life.

According to a report from the Office of Minority Health at the Department of Health and Human Services, African-Americans are at higher risk to develop blood clots than other communities.  This hit home for Traci Wilkes Smith, Vice President of NBCA’s Board of Directors as well as a member of ABWA, because she survived a DVT and PE a few years ago. Traci is acutely aware of the threat to life that she experienced, and wants to alert others to the fact that lives can be saved if blood clots are recognized and treated right away.

We encourage you to get involved.  There are many ways to make a difference:

  • Register to walk and create your personal fundraising page Recruit friends, family members and business associates to form a Walk Team
  • Donate to NBCA in support of one of our walkers

The National Blood Clot Alliance’s mission is to advance prevention, early diagnosis and successful treatment of blood clots, clotting disorders and clot-provoked strokes through public awareness, advocacy and patient and professional education.
