NATT Stop the Clot Patient Stories

NATT is collecting stories that reveal the personal side of blood clots and clotting disorders. Too often, conditions are dehumanized through clinical terminology and research jargon. While such language is important and necessary in certain forums, a human story that describes one’s personal relationship to a condition is most accessible to the general public.

The CMS Ruling on Venous Thromboembolism After Total Knee or Hip Arthroplasty

This is an in-depth analysis of the implications of the October 2008 “Never Event” decision by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) to withhold reimbursement for any patient who develops a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after hip or knee replacement. Since NATT is a patient led organization, it immediately expressed reservations about the zeal in such a “black and white” policy, since it overlooks the “grays” in the fact that clots may ensue when there is appropriate thromboprophylaxis given, or even withheld appropriately due to contraindication in certain patient populations.

Jane's Story

NATT recently received a patient story from a young woman in Mexico who prefers to stay anonymous, even as she was eager to share her experience. The story underscores the challenge of accurate and timely diagnosis of clots going beyond the US, and the impact of the uncertainty resonates world wide. To honor the author's wishes she is referred to as "Jane" in this article.

Jassmin's Story - Blood Clot Patient Story

My name is Jassmin Robinson and I am a 14 year old young lady from Ohio. I was correctly diagnosed with May Thurner syndrome on January 1, 2008. Another name for this syndrome is iliac vein compression syndrome, because the left iliac vein in the groin is compressed by the right iliac artery. This increases the likelihood of a DVT in the left leg.

David Bock was seriously injured when he slipped and fell in Upland, California on March 8, 2008, while visiting there from his home in Arizona. He was rushed to the emergency room (ER) of the nearest hospital where the ER doctor diagnosed fractures of his left tibia and fibula in his lower left leg. (left ankle bimalleolar fracture). He was in a great deal of pain, and was told that the fractures needed open reduction internal fixation surgical repair.
