What is Impact of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and
Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
in your state? NBCA has installed a map of the Annual Incidence of Blood Clots (DVT/PE) and Deaths in the United States and Each State. Click here to view the interactive DVT/PE map. NBCA Executive Director, Alan Brownstein said “now you will be able find out the impact of this public health crisis in your state with the click of a mouse.” This will help advocates in each state to interpret national estimates from the Surgeon General’s Call to Action and Dr. John Heit’s projections (Mayo Clinic) from Blood, 2005.

These two national estimates were allocated to individual states on the basis of state population as a percentage of U.S. population so that advocacy efforts would have more meaning at the state and local levels. Clearly the numbers used by the Surgeon General’s office are different from the Mayo Clinic projections. This is based on different scientific methodologies from which these numbers are derived or perhaps less than scientific assumptions.
Whatever number is used for describing the incidence of blood clots or related mortality, it is clear that DVT/PE is a major public health burden in the US. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC ) is taking the lead in organizing a national surveillance initiative to arrive at a more solid number with a better understanding of populations at greatest risk. Once this is achieved there will be a sharper public health focus in preventing DVT/PE. To view the data in table form as a PDF file click here.
